In the US state of Virginia, kratom is legal to manufacture, distribute, sell, and possess as of February 2018. There have been no bills to ban kratom in the state, nor any definitive news of a legislative push to restrict it. Virginia is one the few states in the eastern US to take an observant stance regarding kratom–that is, to wait and see the results of studies in other states–whereas the leaf is legal in every state west of Arkansas. Only three of these states (Oklahoma, Arizona, and Utah) have failed legislation.

The discussion of the article was whether or not kratom is as addictive as opiates, and if using it to overcome addiction to “hard drugs” is simply trading one for another. This news report doesn’t necessarily reflect the state’s stance on kratom as a whole.
As it stands, many cases related to kratom’s controversy can be attributed to a lack of information on the leaf. Kratom, on the other hand, is simply a dehydrated and crushed form of a leaf that has natural effects, and it is likely that it will face a similar plight as cannabis. It is likely that each state, including Virginia, will enact some form of scrutiny about the safety of the leaf, so long as the FDA withholds its thumbs up.
