Kratom has quickly become one of the most widely used botanicals around the world. Heralded by users for its purported ability to uplift moods, increase energy, relax and reduce daily stress, and more, kratom has made its mark.
With increasing popularity comes questions from regular users and novices alike. One of the most common questions we run into is what are the differences in kratom strains?
Particularly, what is the difference between white, red or green kratom?
Even though all kratom comes from the same Southeast Asian evergreen tree (the Mitragyna Speciosa), a distant cousin to the coffee plant, each strain of kratom is highly unique, and interestingly nuanced.
In this guide, we explore three of the most popular strains of kratom (White, Red and Green) helping you learn more about what makes each so special and where to buy kratom capsules online.
NOTE: In this guide, we’ll use the words ‘vein’ and ‘strain’ interchangeably.
White vein kratom is made from young (immature) leaves of the Mitragyna Speciosa tree. Early in their maturation period, these leaves are carefully harvested, processed and ground into kratom powder.
Harvesting is carried out when the veins of the leaves are still white (hence the name), after which the leaves are dried indoors under strict climate control and no sunlight.
White kratom is known for having an exceedingly high concentration of mitragynine (one of the key alkaloids thought to elicit its desirable effects). This makes white kratom a potent strain that isn’t generally ideal for first time or novice users.
When taken in lower doses, white kratom is reported by users to have an uplifting and energetic effect, similar to a mild stimulant. However, larger doses are noted for resulting in a relaxing and calming sensation.
Due to its mild stimulatory properties at certain doses, some users prefer white kratom to kick off their day (in place of coffee), while those who prefer to kick back and relax after a hard day’s work simply up the dosage.
Ranking among the most popular types of kratom is the Red Veined variety. Red Vein kratom is known for its ‘calming’ abilities, making it an ideal ‘every day’ driver for those of us stressed out from the responsibilities of daily living.
Red vein kratom is made from the leaves of the Mitragyna Speciosa tree, found abundantly throughout SE Asia. Leaves for this strain of kratom are harvested when the ‘veins’ are reddish in color, an indication that just the right blend of alkaloids are present.
The potency of red vein kratom varies widely depending on the sub-type chosen, ranging from mild to strong. Similarly, its effects vary per type.
Red kratom is primarily known for its relaxing and sedative effects, helping to melt away the stresses of the day. Some users find it especially helpful for relaxing after a long day’s work, to get a good night’s sleep, to manage tense muscles, or to reduce pain.
Although more difficult to source, Green Kratom has quickly become a favorite among kratom fans. Noted for its mellow combination of alkaloids and blending of effects, in many ways green kratom resembles white kratom, but with a milder overall effect.
Green kratom is unique in that the harvested leaves from which it is made are first dried indoors in an air-conditioned room. After this initial drying stage is over, the leaves are them moved outside to ‘air dry’ naturally. This process results in a unique blend of alkaloid concentrations that offer properties of red and white kratom all rolled up into one.
Green kratom is known to be a milder alternative to some of the other more potent strains. This makes it a great entry point for beginners, as well as an oft-preferred strain for all-day or mid-day use.
Many users describe green kratom as offering the best properties of white and red kratom without being overwhelming. Commonly described effects include improved focus, motivation, alertness, and a general sense of well-being.
Ultimately, the choice is one of personal preference, situation and purpose. Due to the various strains, and even sub-types within these veins, it may take some experimenting to find the right blend and dose. But that’s part of the fun. Just remember, always start small and see how your body reacts. And always consult your physician prior to beginning any new regiment, kratom included.
